Cooler fall days are finally ahead of us. That means there is more time to enjoy the outdoors without suffering through the heat – for you and your dog. Take advantage of the milder weather over the next couple of months to do some of these fun fall activities with your pup.

  • Go on a “sniff safari” walk with your dog. Adventure doesn’t mean you have to go far away on a trip! You and your dog can have a lovely time on a leisurely walk around the neighborhood. Change it up by going without purpose or destination; instead, walk at a slow pace and allow your dog to stop and sniff at anything they want to. After all, their sense of smell is much stronger than ours. Encountering new or interesting scents is an excellent form of enrichment for dogs, so sniff safaris are an excellent way to get both their brain and body stimulated.
  • Take part in some classic fall fun activities. Pumpkin picking, corn mazes, and other fall-tastic places are open to dogs as well as people. This is a great way to spend a fall afternoon. Be sure to call ahead to confirm that they are pet-friendly and what their specific rules are for furry visitors before you get there. You’ll enjoy picking out the best pumpkin, while your pup gets to explore the strange sights, smells, and sounds.
  • Do a photo shoot with your dog. While you’re both enjoying the pumpkin patch, why not bring along a camera and perhaps a cute bow or sheet for a ghost-themed session. To get the best results, opt for an early morning or sunset photo shoot. These times are known as the “golden hour”, and provide optimal, beautiful lighting for your pictures. Bring a fair amount of treats to praise your pup for behaving and to encourage them to sit well for your photos.
  • Head out for a hike. You can revisit an old favorite place to walk or explore a state park or trail that you haven’t ever been to. As always, check ahead of time to make sure your dog is allowed.
  • Take a pet-friendly vacation. If the summer was too busy for you to get away, consider a fall vacation. There are plenty of pet-friendly AirB&Bs and hotels that you could stay at. Whether it’s a lakeside cabin, a beach resort, or a trip north to see some fall foliage, your furry friend can make it all the more exciting and enjoyable.
  • Schedule a playdate with another dog-owning friend. It’s nice to spend a fall afternoon outside with your dog. Getting together with a friend and letting your pups play together makes it even better. Take a walk together or just let your dogs run around in the backyard while you and your friend catch up. A lovely day spent in good company is time well-spent.

Finally, a fall day isn’t complete without some snuggles! The nights are cooling off, and that makes it an excellent time to gather a nest of blankets and bring your pup in for a good cuddle and warm drink. Fall activities are a little different in Florida, but no less special. This year, make some memories with your dog!
